'Zines - Student Voice in Educational Issues

Students often tell me about their frustration at not being heard. Adults make decisions about their education. They feel as if they do not have input regarding their own educational experience.

Public Education is experiencing reform and change. 
BUT what do the STUDENTS need? Who will hear them?

Guerrilla Students made 'zines about their viewpoints regarding a variety of current educational issues. Student generated a list of issues they are concerned about, then focused on a particular one they wanted to address. They researched multiple views of the issue, chose a personal stance, and created the 'zine to voice that stance.

Educational Issues addressed by students: Teacher Layoffs, School Lunches, Standardized Testing, TIF money, Budget Cuts, Inequity, Class Size, Appointed School Board, Student Activism, Tardy policies, Dehumanization, Longer School Days, Violence, Drugs, Loss of programs, Loss of the Arts, Poor or No supplies/books, etc..

"Zines are being distributed through a variety of means (stay tuned). Next week they will be displayed and given away at the Art Show "It's Not Just Art!" at Firecat Projects Gallery. May 22, 6pm - 10 pm. 2124 N. Damen, Chicago, IL.

"Shout Outs!" - Wheat Pastes on the streets of Chicago

We have been working hard on our Arts Advocacy Project. Guerrilla students are creating Linoleum Block Prints that we will turn into Wheat Paste Ups.

Their theme is "What Does Art Mean To You?". They explored their experiences with art and feelings about dwindling access to the arts. Art has been cut in education programs around the country. The costs of attending a museum, symphony, or performance has become increasingly expensive. Many of us are priced right out of participating in America's vibrant art communities.

We are creating these pieces to be displayed directly into the community. We will wheat paste them on the streets. Our art project is called "Shout Outs!"  Students are shouting to the world. They want you to know what art means to them.

We are VERY EXCITED to announce that this work is part of a larger exhibit at Firecat Projects Gallery called "It's Not Just Art!".  The wheat pastes will be displayed along the street of Firecat Projects. This is a collection of art by artist/art teachers and their students in response to conversations about the state of art education.  The work has come out of a 3 year project called Every Art Every Child, developed by Kate Thomas and Matt Dealy (Chicago Teacher's Center and Northeastern University). A special thank you to artist Tony Fitzpatrick and Stan Klein from Firecat Projects for hosting this special show.
